Solar cell cost-per-watt is five to ten times higher than coal-fired electricity—the baseline cost of today’s commercial power. To be competitive, solar cell costs must be significantly reduced and solar energy efficiency increased. The PV industry is increasing efficiency and reducing cost through reduced silicon content and improved cell design. To make this happen, new materials and process steps need to be introduced to the manufacturing process.
